Kendra and Chris are Married! (Arden Hills Resort Club, Sacramento Wedding Photographer)

The day could not have been more perfect...the beauty of the fall with such warmth in the air. Kendra and Chris picked the perfect day to become husband and wife. They were joining as a family...Kendra, little “R” and Chris. The family had reserved the Villa at Arden Hills Resort Club where there were numerous lovely spots to photograph. Kendra’s dress was a picture itself and she looked just lovely wearing it! The flowers were designed and made by Corrine Queen from Fit for a Queen Weddings...Kendra tells me that Corrine even did her corsage for her senior ball! The delicious cake was made by Judy and John Shelton of Shelton’s Wedding Cake Design...it was beautiful. Kendra did an outstanding job making all the arrangements for their special day! I had two assisting with the photography, Lindsay and Gwendolyn, they captured so many of the beautiful details from the wedding. What a amazing day all around. “Lord, take this darling family and bless them and give them many special years ahead. Guide them as they raise their sweet daughter and thank you for their family who has been, and continues to give such loving support to them”. Congratulations Chris and Kendra!!!

Well, children do not come any sweeter than these. We had so much fun taking photos of these two sisters. The youngest, little “B” captured my husband’s heart the second that she showed an interest in his “matoe” garden. And Miss “H” was so cooperative and ready for anything! These two can come and play with me and my camera any day of the week. Children are such a refreshing treat in life!

New Studio!

One week ago today we had a dedication time for my New Studio! It was a wonderful time for me to stay thank you to so many that helped me to get this project off the ground. We had a time together to give this space to our Lord Jesus to use precisely as He sees fit. The location of the studio is 4800 Sierra College Ave in Rocklin just off Highway 80. The studio is in a lovely sunlit room at Lifehouse Church where I share space with them. I use it for a studio and them for a “family room”. I can photograph there as well as around the property. And, it’s a perfect place for me to meet with clients. It’s a great space and I am very blessed to have it. Come see it sometime!

Brad, Kevin and Kenny's Senior Photos

Yes, my baby is a senior in high school! Last evening Bradley and I, along with Kenny and Kevin…his two best buds in school, went to old town Roseville for some great fun. These boys are all very nice and polite and quite a pleasure to spend time with. We started out at the Pick and Pull and headed toward old town. The sun was kind to us as we got the last few shots. After the shoot I dropped the boys at a restaurant for them to enjoy some “guy time” and I went home to cull the images. When the boys were done with their meal, they were able to have fun reliving the fun from earlier in the evening. Bradley is my youngest and my only son…so the time was very special to me. Thanks Brad, Kenny and Kevin for the photo shoot! “Lord, bless these boys as they grow and experience their last year of “childhood”. Cause them to seek you and find joy in You. Guide them in the years ahead and help them all to find Your path for their lives…Amen”.

Today was a great day! I awoke to three lovely people giving me their love in birthday cards! Then when my 17 year old son actually wanted to go out in public with me and have breakfast together I jumped on the offer. So Lindsay, Bradley and I all headed to IHOP! Johnny had to work...:( (Only sad face of the day). In the afternoon I went to a lovely craft fair with a friend and purchased some pretty little treats from Cherie a wonderful artist! Check out the darling red felted pin and delicate stationary that I brought home with me! The day was soooo nice and now I'm looking forward to having my husband home for the evening. It was a wonderful Day!

Precious Newborn

Last week I had some time with a past bride and groom when I photograph their precious little newborn. They live amidst the shaded pines of Pollack Pines and the day was dark and overcast. When I arrived there was smoke coming out of the chimney! That tells you something about a September day…it was very dark and chilly! Well, needless to say, since I am primarily a natural light photographer and there was virtually no natural light to work with I was faced with a challenge. We worked around the lack of light and I was able to capture a few special images. It is my true hope and prayer that these images will bring back some very special memories of a very dear time in the lives of this new family.

Yesterday was a beautiful day here in the Sacramento Area! Erin and James had us come and photograph them at the temple where they were married. We took some family shots as well…their family could not have been sweeter or kinder people. After the formal portraits we went on to the Old Firehouse Grill in Old Town Sacramento. Wow, was that a wonderful place to hold a wedding reception. Thanks Erin and James for allowing us to be a part of your special day. You are a special couple. Blessings to you both!

Little Miss J is all over the place with energy and as cute as a button. And Mr. C is about as sweet a young man as I have run across. Grass Valley Wedding

This beautiful couple celebrated their love and commitment to each other after having waited years to find one other. Both of them had spent many years on mission fields across the world and a mutual friend thought that they might just like to meet. The rest as it’s said…is history. The couple and family photos were taken at the beautiful Empire Mine in Grass Valley and the wedding was held at Calvary Bible Church down the street. The reception hall was the Grass Valley Elks Lodge…love the wood ceilings! They rode off “into the sunset” on a darling two seat bike surrounded by bubbles and happy family and friends. What a blessed day!

Ok, I guess that I should call my post gratawednesday! I am writing today about a very needed and special gift that my dear husband went out yesterday to purchase for me. A COMPASS!!! As we were out looking around for a great family shoot location I kept looking at my shadow trying to figure out where the sun was going to be at 4:00 pm…the time of day when this Saturday’s family needed to have their pictures taken. Well, you have no idea how many times Johnny has said that he was going to buy me a compass…and yesterday was the day…he just couldn’t stand it any longer…watching me circling around trying to find my shadow! Sharon is a LOVELY lady! She is also my business coach and the owner of Club Fresh Star and becoming a wonderful friend. She is in a Christian Roundtable with me and her influence to the group is awesome. Last month she celebrated her 65th birthday with her husband, all of her daughters and grandchildren. What a privilege to have been a part of that special celebration. Sharon planned the party around the children with…pin the tail on the donkey…drop the clothespins in the jar…hokey pokey…and M&M’s bingo! The party had cake and ice cream and balloons! What a special day. Sharon is having me make her an album of her memories from that day. Can’t wait to see how beautiful it turns out! “Thank you Lord for this beautiful woman and her family, I am blessed to have crossed their paths…amen”.

Last Sunday our church had “Church on the Green”. It was great to all be together outside under the trees! After the worship service we had old fashion pot luck…yum! Then the kids had all kinds of fun with face painting, cotton candy, bounce houses and tractor rides! So today (yes a day late) I would say I am way grateful for an amazing church that loves-on-people so amazingly well.

Last weekend Johnny and I had such fun going to Grass Valley to photograph an event that the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition put on. They had Antsy McClain and The Trailer Park Troubadours with them for a fund raiser. The band was wonderful! Johnny had heard of them before, but I had not. What a fun band! OK...since this is gratatuesday and I just came home from watching my son get his first "letter" with his golf team I had to post a photo from my phone camera! Yes, I forgot to pack my camera and here I was, probably the only professional photographer in the crowd using a phone to take a proud photo of my son and his team! I am grateful for Coach Steinbeck of the Del Oro Golf team. He was wonderful to bring Bradley home from golf so many days! I am grateful that my son has something that he does so well and enjoys so much! "Thank you Lord for Bradley and for placing him in my life. I love him so much and you are a wonderful God to have blessed me with him...Amen"

Well, my job has some fun perks! So, this Gratatuesday I am thankful for some special and delicious food that we were blessed with! Johnny and I headed out to Grass Valley to take some advertizing shots for the Nevada County Gold Magazine last Thursday afternoon. I had nine appointments to take photos of local businesses. Johnny and I went from one place to another and had such a nice time getting to know the restaurant owners! But the perk that I am talking about is the wonderful food that they would gift us with. Below are three dishes that we were given to enjoy that day after photographing them for the magazine. The Thai meal that we were blessed with from Taste of Thai, we took to a park and ate out in the warm sunshine together. Mind you, this was the park were we walked to after our first official date together…special! The shrimp and pasta was from 5 Mile House…we enjoyed it there while listening to a local artist, Paul Kamm play his guitar and sing beautifully…I bought a CD of his music. And the beautiful salad and pita bread from Cirinos that we had to take home on ice…as we were just too full to eat a thing more! Johnny and I had such a fun day together…I will remember it for a long time! I am grateful for my amazing husband and the delicious food that we were so graciously given!

Over the past three years I have taken photos for ads and articles for use in the Nevada County Gold Magazine. It’s really been wonderful getting to know so many of the local merchants. One of them I know very well…Julie Gold, owner of Crafters Cottage. I actually just stopped in on her this past week to visit while on my way to one of my NC Gold Magazine jobs. Wow! Her store is so very darling! Since I had my camera with me I offered to take some shots for her web site. I found out that she already had photos taken from another friend of ours Michelle Coomler of Turning Leaf Studios but she wanted a few more taken even still. So, here is a peek at the most darling little shop in Penn Valley (close to Grass Valley for those of you who haven’t heard of this sweet little place). Julie is such a sweet lady and has such a talent for design. She even sells furniture that she has refinished. Stop by and see her and tell her that her fan Patti sent you!

There are some pretty awesome things to be grateful for this week! But the one that I needed to post was about the time I had last month with my sister over tea. It is not often that I get to visit with my sister Donelle, because we live in different states! This visit to Oregon was an especially special time. As you might have read in one of my previous blogs I was able to attend a wonderful retreat for like minded Christian photographers. Then, I shuttled on a plane over to the Portland area where I was soooo blessed to spend a few days with my sister and her family. As the years go on, I appreciate family even more than I did in the past. This visit with my sister was so much of a blessing and I thank the Lord for the time that I was given with her. I love you Donelle and was so excited to hear of how the Lord is working in your life! His beauty is shining through you…that makes me smile.

Just got back from a fabulous retreat in Sisters Oregon called ‘Be Thou My Vision’. It was a retread for women photographers who wish to have the Lord as center of their businesses. It was an amazing time and I am still debriefing from so much that I learned and want to implement. Jane Johnson was a very gifted teacher and we all had such a special time getting to know one another. The accommodations were perfect and the weather was dry for the most part! Today I went to a lovely lady’s home to photograph her and her friends doing a very special service for some special girls around the world. These ladies were making dresses for girls out of pillowcases! Many girls around the world do not have dresses to wear and they are seen as “prey” because of there poverty. Last week I had an opportunity to photograph Chef Athena Palombi Mackis at KCRA. She did a wonderful cooking demonstration on the morning news. Notice the of photos of her getting ready in the “Green Room”…you always hear about that room, but never really know if it is green or not…not. Also, that morning there were children from Thomas Jefferson Middle School of Roseville on a field trip, they had some fun of their own!

Yesterday I had many plans…but they went by the way when I woke up with this strong feeling in me that I needed to get away and pray and seek God on some upcoming changes that will be happening in my business. So, I did just that. After showering I grabbed my camera, a notepad and my bible and headed towards Davis. When I got there I found my way to the UC Davis campus and found this amazing “park” with a glorious trail along the river. The sun was warm and I sat on the grass for the longest time with my heart being blessed to have such time with my Lord. I was told of a farmers market that’s held every Wednesday and Saturday in the middle of town. My map from the student center got me there and I sat outdoors at Crepeville having a wonderful cup of coffee while I waited for the market to start gathering its crowd. Again, the sun felt so amazing and the smells of the market vendors food was awesome! Did you know that the Davis farmers market was voted the best in the nation? Well, that’s what I learned yesterday! It is beautiful place with some wonderful fresh produce. Take a drive that way some time and enjoy yourself as much as I did!

There were some interesting people that I met along my journey yesterday. Don Saylor is running for Yolo County Supervisor and he introduced me to Alison Rose Munn a lovely musician. Then there were those who's names I did not get, but found them to be interesting enough to photograph.

East Bay Restaurant Supply Demonstration Event {Sacramento Food Photographer}

If you have never been to East Bay Restaurant Supply in Sacramento you might just consider going there! I grant you, that I am no chef…but they have some really beautiful things there and they have cooking classes and demonstrations that you (and I) can go and learn how to become great chefs!
A couple of weeks ago I met with my Little Starlet Athena, and took some beautiful modeling shots of her in the isles of that store. I was not able to stay for her cooking demonstration…but wish that I could have as her food is soooo amazing! (Photos of that shoot to come soon!)
While I was there I was able to sample some of the other food and photograph a bit of the event. There was a roasted pig outside…um…I hear it tasted wonderful…but after seeing it I up close and personal I choose to pass.
There were some darling little girls that I could not resist getting a photo or two of and some very friendly vendors.
One vendor that I met that I really enjoyed talking with was Cammie Winston. Cammie makes some of the very best little salted caramel macaroons that I have ever tasted! I learned that she also does Voiceovers…I checked out her website and she sounds so crazy professional! She is starting a baking business and I wish her the very best! I have posted a picture or two of her and her cookies and bread. And last but not least I was way impressed with Connie’s Ships and Trips Travel business cards, so much so that I had to take a photo of then…they are darling!

Ok, so I am way behind in this post! Like about three seasons late! Last summer a group of photographers that I often shoot with were featured at the Spanish Fly Hair Salon in downtown Sacramento at the Second Saturday Event. This is a fun evening of food and special events. The salon hosted a photography shoot with some wonderful upcoming models that we work with. Brandy is one of the models and she has been in the running to be part of the show Americas Next Top Model. Five pieces of my work were featured on two of the walls and another was placed out as a poster for the featured designed Victor Louis. So, take a look at some photos that should have been posted many a moon ago!

Mornings in the Spring

Mornings in Loomis are generally quiet with the exception of the train running by about a half mile away. We live in a home that has numerous perennials in the yard…and this is our first spring to enjoy them. Here is the view that I have from my big easy chair that I have my morning devotional in. This morning I was particularly grateful for our backyard and the hope of leaves on the trees and color abounding all around.

This is a special post today...it is a post for a contest that I have entered. The wonderful photographer Amy Wenzel is giving away a seat for her May workshop and she is asking us to answer the following question:
"Tell us how you love, serve or inspire other people in your life, and what attending the workshop might mean for your photography journey. You don’t need to have a business to enter. Whether you are a pro, semi-pro or hobbyist with an SLR, I am so, so excited to hear your story!"

Amy, this is quite a question…How do I love, serve or inspire others in my life?
If I do indeed love and inspire others in my life, it is only by the grace of God and His work in me. Where do I begin? It was many years ago…when I was only about eight years old, that I sat in a Sunday school class and asked that Jesus come and live in me and help me to be good. I asked Him to forgive me for the things that I had done that were wrong and then I said “Amen”. In the years that followed I studied my bible and prayed and tried to live a life that would honor Him. Then came a kind young youth pastor that caught my eye and apparently I caught his! He had just been diagnosed with lymphoma and had finished radiation treatment when we started dating. When we became engaged, I remember my father asking me how I would do if he were not to live long. My response…I would rather have him some than not at all. We were young and full of inexperience, which at times provided us with highs and other times lows, as we ministered together over the years to follow. Our marriage lasted 12 ½ years. He died at age 38, not of cancer but of massive heart failure. I was left with two beautiful children from him, a 5 year old daughter and a 9 month old baby boy. Many people asked “How did you get through it”? My answer, by God’s grace I just placed one foot in front of the other. The outpouring of love on our family only made my faith stronger in the Lord. It wasn’t long before my children and I made a move back home to California to be closer to my parents to help me raise these children. And as many do, I got into another relationship far sooner than I should have and married very quickly…placing my children and myself in an eight year struggle…which finally ended in divorce. If I can say anything, it is this…God is a God of GRACE. Once again, I needed His forgiveness…but my heart craved his GRACE. It was during that eight year struggle that I realized how much I needed to know the Lord in a true life changing way. One would have thought that being a pastors wife would have done that, but it is life’s heart ache that tend to bring one too their knees more than anything else.
It was after my divorce that I became serious about photography. I poured my heart into something that would bring beauty and good memories into my life and the lives of those that I touched. Then I was truly blessed…with a man to love me the way that a man is to love a family…and for him a family that came as a package deal. This wonderful man has encouraged and supported me the entire time that I have been on this journey of becoming a business owner and an artist. Photography was in a way a “life saver” for me. It continues to give me something to pour myself into that’s productive and pure and provides me a way to give to others. Every day I am in a pursuit to become a better artist. To take better pictures straight out of the camera and to edit them so to present my clients and friends with something that they can treasure for years to come. To God be the Glory.

Saturday could not have been more beautiful! The sky did not have a cloud in it…well maybe a very tiny cloud, but the sky was blue, blue, blue! Johnny and I got out of the house later in the morning and stopped for breakfast on our way to our photo shoot in San Francisco. My little Starlet, Athena Mackis was doing a cooking demonstration at Bloomingdale’s on Market St. There was a St. Patrick’s Day parade that made for some “fun” traffic on 5th St. but we got there in fine time none the less. Athena made some delicious food and entertained us all for two hours of fun and fabulous smells and tastes! After the demonstration Johnny and I spent some time watching the surf and photographing the Golden Gate Bridge. Our day was blessed with lovely people…Holly at Bloomingdale’s was so gracious and Athena was kind and lovely as ever. Enjoy the sights of the city and imagine the tastes and smells of Athena’s fine cooking!

Amilia's 21st Birthday at Mikuni in Roseville

You only turn 21 once! But you can party many times! We spent last evening celebrating our daughter Amelia as she turns 21. You might say that we were late in the celebration but on the weekend of her birthday she opted to go to Reno to celebrate…not with dear old Dad and family? Go figure! We were able to meet up at Mikuni’s in Roseville and had a wonderful time eating sushi and catching up on life. Here is a peek at the time that we had. We missed having Lindsay with us, but had a chance to talk with her on the phone for a bit. We love our kids! HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR AMELIA!

Late in January I set off to photograph the lovely Athena at beautiful Jeriko Winery near Mendocino here in Northern California. The weather was rainy, but it just meant for cozy fires and wonderful times in the warm and buzzing kitchen. Athena is building her web site http://www.athenamackis.com/ and wishes many photos of her displaying her culinary talents and the environments where she works her magic. She is one wonderful chef, I might add! You have no doubt seen her on my blog many times before…mostly in modeling, in which she is stunning to photograph as well! I got up early on Sunday morning and had some time in the Word…then went to a local Calvary Chapel for worship. It was a sweet service and the pastor sung with his guitar from the heart. Then when I came “home” I was served a wonderful breakfast and spent part of the afternoon pouring through the photos in the fabulous cookbooks that Athena and Emily brought with them…inspiration for me!

Earlier this week I had the privilege to visit the Terra D’Oro Winery in Amador County where I met Chris Leamy their winemaker and Linda the woman who coordinates the events they have. Terra D’Oro Winery will be one of the wineries that will be on the tour “Behind the Cellar Door” over the weekend of March 6-7Th where I will be photographing the beautiful and talented Chef Athena Mackis while she demonstrates her culinary talents. Athena and I met together on Monday to take some promo shots for her and the winery. So, here is a look at both the beautiful winery and the beautiful Athena!

NCWEDS meeting at the Noell Tower House in Nevada City

Last night I attended a meeting with NCWEDS (Nevada County Wedding and Event Destination Specialists) at the Noell Tower House in Nevada City. The evening was lovely and the hostess Mardie...well let's just say was about as charming and fascinating as they come! Mardie had the event catered by Kady of KDG Cooks and the candles were lit and the soft music was playing. Both of Mardie's assistants Lori and Heather were as helpful and kind as Mardie! This charming old Victorian was established in 1878 and is just stunning! The Noelle Tower House is available for rent for Elopement Weddings and High Teas. Donna Hoekstra with Joy of Life Events is wonderful at coordinating the NCWEDS meetings. Thanks to both Mardie and Donna for such a lovely evening!

Grandpa Burts' Celebration of Life

Normally, I would not post photos of a memorial service, but this was a very special service. It was to honor my late father-in-law, Harold Burts. We arrived late due to an hour long delay from a mud slide on highway 17...and were seated in the second row...so please forgive the extra heads in some of the photos. The service was beautiful and I feel blessed to have been there with my family. The service was last week, the day of the major storm her in Northern California, when we would wind our way from Sacramento to Scott's Valley for a Celebration of a Life...my kids grandfather life. Harold Burts was a fine man who loved Jesus and his family greatly. I am so very blessed to have had him in my children's and my lives for all these years. Here are a handful of photos from that time as a family celebrating the life of my fine father-in-law. As many of you know, I was widowed early in my life...this is my family from my first husband and dear friend and the father of my two children.

Grandpas middle son Greg, gave the eulogy...and did an AMAZING job. Such a tribute to his fine father.

Grandpa chose the hymns that he wanted sung at his service...old hymns, but full of meaning.

Here is a very special photo...this is my son Brad with his name sake Brad Collins...the man who lead my grandfather to the Lord many years ago. All of my grandfathers family members (without exception) are Christians and follow the Lord with their lives.

OK, so I admit that these photos are not my best because are from my PHONE CAMERA! It just goes to show you that a photographer can not be without a way to take pictures! But hold on, there is a story to go with these, so hear goes. Years ago when I was a young girl, my parents took all four of us kids to this wonderful and special restaurant in San Francisco's China Town. We would go twice a year and it was such a treat and a great time for us as a family. I remember my favorite dish being the pressed duck (weird huh?) and after each visit, we would always scour China Town for a treasure or two or three! These are such special memories for me. Fast forward to three years ago...to my husbands and my honeymoon. We were in China Town and we looked high and low to find this place to share a meal until we finally found it. Yum! Now fast forward even more...to this weekend! Johnny and I celebrated our three year anniversary. (I love this man more now than then!) And yes, we stumbled upon the restaurant once again and had a meal and reminisced. What would we do without memories. Pictures sure help to preserve them. So, here is a bit of our time in China Town and a photo of Kans restaurant...a small way to preserve a big memory.

Christmas Day

It was a wonderful evening with my dear family...here are a couple of photos from our special Christmas dinner. Per tradition we serve a prime rib and Johnny cooked it perfectly...as always! After we stuffed ourselves, we opened a few family gifts and had a lovely music recital that my nieces put on. We are blessed!

Finally, things are slowing down a bit around here. Christmas will be her in just two days and our tree is up and the few decorations that we place out are in their special spots. It seems that each year as of late, I have wanted to make a tree that is fresh and new to that particular year. We keep very few ornaments from the previous years and start fresh with a new "look" for the tree. This year we went simple, round decorated balls and a few stars from previous years. It seems to me that the stress of decorating is lessened if I can custom make the tree to the "mood" of that year!

Here is something that we have placed out for at least 15 years. Many years ago when money was very tight, we did not have funds for a Christmas tree or any other decorations for that matter. So, my little five year old Lindsay and I sat at the kitchen counter and formed a manger out of salt/flower/water dough. We took a box that we had and painted it (yes the blue color that it still wears) and found some straw and made a manger. Every year this is the one consistant decoration that comes out to decorate for Christmas and celebrate the birth of our Lord Jesus.

Last night I blogged about my daughter Lindsay. Then this morning I was thinking how fun it would be if our friend Phil would send a photo of Bradley for me to post. When I checked my email there was a photo waiting for me! How perfect. :) You see, Phil has a home in Palm Springs that he wanted to take his grandson and my son to spend some time at over winter break golfing. Bradley jumped on the chance...who wouldn't? Golfing at two of the most professional courses around, swimming and just having fun with the guys. Every once in a while there are some extra special "gifts" that we are given. I believe that this is one of those times for Brad. Phil, thanks for sending the photo for us to enjoy, but mostly thanks for your kind and generous heart toward my son! (Brad is the one swinging the club. :)

So, Lindsay is home from college for the Christmas break. Yeah! I love having her home…spoken like a true mother I know.  Tonight she had three of her closest friends over to spend the night and bake cookies. (You can't believe the amount of giggles are coming from my kitchen!)They let me bring out my camera and have some of my own fun! So darling! They are about the nicest group of girls that I could hope my daughter to be friends with. The day could not have been more perfect! Eric and Kelly had chosen a beautiful fall afternoon to be married at one of the most charming venues that I have ever photographed a wedding. ..The Flower Farm…just the perfect spot for a wedding and even the start of the honeymoon! You might remember this couple from last year’s engagement session at Lake Tahoe. I am so very happy for them as they now become a family. Eric is such a fun loving and enjoyable guy and Kelly is sweet and quietly beautiful. We first met Kelly at her mother’s darling restaurant in Grass Valley called Charlie’s. When Johnny and I were first dating, we would go in and have breakfast and just love the time together with the "cowboy" environment and delicious food. Eric was the cook and Kelly our server! Eric who is quite a chef had his special recipe's made for their reception and they were oh so yummy! Many years of love and happiness are wished for you Kelly and Eric…hugs to you both!

Jennifer and TC's Wedding

Jennifer and TC had opted for a destination wedding. They live in Reno and wanted to have a place to escape to for their big day. They invited all their friends...thinking that maybe a few would join them...but they had the entire gang come and celebrate their ten year relationship together with them. 140 of their family and friends traveled from Reno to witness them become husband and wife. The ceremony and reception was held at the Stone House in Nevada City. The cake was beautifully done by Emily's Catering of Grass Valley. As you see their daughter had a dress to match moms! The evening was one great party. Congratulations Jennifer, TC and little "bug"!

Thanksgiving with Family!

We were fortunate enough to celebrate Thanksgiving twice! On Thanksgiving morning my family drove to the Bay Area for dinner with one side of our family...my lovely family that I have been blessed with (from my first husband) for the last 30 years. Such a lovely day with my bothers and sisters in law and my "other set" of parents! The next day we were able to again all get together with Johnny's daughter and boy friend at my mothers house. The amazing blessing of a family, warm homes, plenty...I mean PLENTY of food and lots and lots of love! "Lord, you are a provider of all of our needs and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your kindness towards me and those that I call family. I love you Lord...Amen"

The amber colored afternoon could not have been more ideal for a Nevada City fall wedding. Vanessa was truly radiant and made a “picture perfect” bride. She seemed amazingly calm as the house hold was all abuzz preparing for the special afternoon of promises and kisses. Vanessa and Nathaniel had met in Jr. High and have been best of friends for years. There lives had grown together to the point of marriage… how darling and in love they are! The evening began at the St. Canice church in Nevada City and ended with a beautiful dinner and dancing to the band Boogie Shooze. All this festivity was had at the historic Miners Foundry, also in Nevada City. The wedding coordination was smoothly pulled together by Donna of Joy of Life Events ...it was a pleasure to work with such a wonderful group of venders. Here is a family that is spread over the world..from California to New Zealand! Last month Johnny and I took a few days to go to Yosemite. It was beautiful and I will post more photos from our time there before long! But, while we were there we stayed with dear friends of many years. Randy works for the park and they have a beautiful view in their back yard. Since they were so very gracious to offer us a bed and a couple of meals it was the very least that I could do to take a few family shots for them. The evening was electric! My husband and I had been invited to Victor Louis' "One Night in Paris" amazing fashion show during Sacramento's Fashion Week. The event had been in the planning for some time and I many times considered attending. But the decision was made when we had been offered complementary VIP seats with views from the balcony including dinner from Athena Mackis...she was dancing and catering the event that evening! Often I have photographed Athena, but never before have I eaten her wonderful cuisine. She danced like a true professional ballerina. The fashions that evening were stunning! The evening was a definite treat.

Bayside Church with Luis Palau {Rocklin Photographer}

When I heard that Luis Palau was going to be in town I was all about going myself and taking my kids to hear this legendary evangelist. We arrived at Bayside Church about 1/2 hour before the program was scheduled to begin...to assure that we got some great seats. We were not too very far from the front so I could get some great photos, of course! The evening started with an amazing band featuring Lincoln Brewster. Then it went right into this fabulous message about how to have assurance that you are a Christian if you believe in Jesus. I had heard so much about Bayside Church, but this was the first service that I had ever attended there. It would truly be a place that I would recommend to anyone who has any interest in knowing more about Jesus. The place itself was low key until the lights and music came alive. Then the whole environment became electric in praise to the Lord! It was quite a site with awesome sound and even a subtle vibration in the air. Check it out for yourself!

This post is way past due...like about four months! Last spring Matt and Alex had their senior portrait session and I can't believe that I am just now getting around to posting about them. They are twins...can you tell??? (Duh!) These two guys have great hearts and are such nice people! I have a photo of them on the "clients page" of my web site and I have had some girls asking about them. So, here is a bit more "eye candy" for those girls who think these twins needed more press...Matt and Alex!

Let's Play Dress Up! It is such fun to go into mamas closet and find some "pretties", into her jewelry drawer and make-up cabinet...just to "play dress up"! Can't you remember the fun that you had doing just that? I sure can. It would be such fun to dig out some of the pictures that my mother took of me playing "dress up" and relive that time of childhood when adulthood was only a dream. Of course, as we become adults we can only wish for the care free days of childhood...but such is life...too often wishing it away instead of enjoying the precious moments that we have. Here's to childhood. Enjoy!

Moms Garden Flowers {Rocklin Photographer}

This Friday evening I was with a few extremely gifted women photographers who have photography businesses in the Sacramento Metro Area. When I came home from my time with these ladies, my husband and I took a ride to visit about our day and spend some cherished time together. As I started debriefing about the evening, I realized that I seem to approach my business much like this bouquet of flowers from my mothers garden...simple and free of tradition or "rules". We have this other bouquet of flowers sitting on our counter that my daughter brought home from her work (from someone who could not keep them, and had wanted her to have them instead). The bouquet is very pretty I suppose...it is large and full of yellow and purple traditional flowers, that is quite perfectly and symmetrically arranged. Then there is the bouquet of flowers from my mothers back yard. Simple flowers clustered in a plain drinking glass...placed on our cluttered coffee table. Refreshing and purely sweet. Lindsay and I had just yesterday visited an elderly lady in a convalescent home where there was a bouquet of flowers much like the one from my mothers back yard. I was so taken by them...also refreshing and purely sweet. Sometimes I feel very simple...like I create photos without the "rules" of photography...like I don't measure up to so many of the photographers that I know and greatly respect. Then I get to talking with Johnny and realize that some people love flowers that come arranged by a traditional florist and that others love flower that look like they have just come out of their mothers back yard. I guess that's what makes it all so wonderful and worth it...knowing that we all have been given an "eye" to see things in our own beautiful way.

Often I read the blog written by a very fabulous photographer Jasmine Star and love what I learn from her. Most of the time it is about photography, but today it was about "life". I just had to share this story that she wrote about her twin sister Bianca's first high school track competition.
Read it and enjoy...be inspired and blessed all at the same time!

Hurdles, Of The Metal Kind

"There were ten of them to be exact. Ten metal hurdles to jump. To overcome. To conquer. From the center of the track field, I saw my twin sister stretch in her preassigned lane. It was Bianca's first high school track competition and I could see the nerves on her face, kinda like wrinkles only with less wrinkle. To be honest, I had no idea why she was competing. Didn't she know? Didn't she remember that we both agreed we had no hops? That God somehow forgot to give us the coordination to, oh, say, JUMP?! But, alas, she continued to stretch.

When the gun fired, the girls took off for the first hurdle and Bianca wobbled over the first one. I breathed a sigh of relief. But then it happened. Everything we dreaded came to life: she tripped over the second hurdle and fell face first into the red, clay track. She quickly ran for the third hurdle, but she tripped again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again over the TENTH hurdle. By the time she crossed the finish line, her knees were bleeding, her hands bruised, and her ego crushed. And, if you looked hard enough, you could see clay packed tightly between her teeth.

I'm not kidding, the crowded stands were silent. Like, eerily so. Hundreds of people watched my sister attempt to jump--yet fall--over each hurdle. I'm sure there were people (myself included) who wished she'd just walk off the track and call it a day. But she didn't. Bianca didn't give up and the stands erupted with applause when she nearly crawled over the finish line.

There isn't a week that passes when I don't think of this story. Of course--being the wretched sister that I am--I laugh so hard tears fall down my face (com'on...it's FUNNY...you had to be there!). I, however, realize my sister taught me one of life's biggest lessons: Regardless of how many times you fall, you'll eventually cross the finish line.

I'm certain I would have never finished the race. Certain. After the second hurdle, I would've dusted myself off and pretended I had a leg cramp. I'd turn and face the stands and mouth: LEGGGG CRAMMMMP. Then I'm dramatically limp off my lane. That's precisely what I would've done. But that's what makes the story so sweet. There are people in the world, like Bianca, who finish the race. Because, really, regardless of how many times you fall, you'll eventually cross the finish line."

Shasta Lake

Do you have those kinds of friends that treat you like you’re family? Matt and Joyce have been so wonderful to us over the years…treating us just like we are part of “them”. These friends have given support to our daughter as she goes through nursing school, they have taken us with them to Hawaii, they have gifted us with time from their time share (for my husband and I to have a romantic get away) and have given so much more! This last week this dear couple invited “our gang” to join “their gang” on a house boat on Shasta Lake. Soooo, we each took time off from either our work, or school, and joined them for one night of their stay on the house boat that they had rented. We slept under the stars, had BBQ, played with their grandchildren, celebrated Ethan's 6^th birthday and Matt's 87^th birthday, went tubing and water skiing, and just plain had some much needed relaxation and visiting. Friends like this are few and far between!

Below is a look at some of our fun...(which includes Bradley having his hand at driving a ski boat)!

Nevada County Fair {Grass Valley Photographer}

So, what would summer be without the county fair? For our family it would not be a complete summer that's for sure! We LOVE the county fair! For over 10 years we have attended the Nevada County Fair in Grass Valley...not just for one day but many each week. The food is amazing and the people are even better! When we go in the evening it is so much fun to see the lights of the carnival area brightly lit. And any time of the day or night it's so wonderful to see all the awesome and amazing redwood trees that are everywhere around the fairgrounds. The livestock auction is something that we have come to so enjoy...it's a place where the whole community comes to support the kids who have worked so very hard to raise animals for the fair. A couple of years back my son had a pig that was auctioned off...the earnings still await him in his savings account for his first car! Then there is the photo entry...yes, each year I enter...sometimes winning a ribbon and other times not. This year I won the BLUE for PROFESSIONAL WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY. So I had to post a photo of me standing under my winning photo. (I also entered the photo just to the left of the blue ribbon photo). A friend of mine won BEST OF SHOW for his Lance Armstrong photo...yea, way to go Richard!!! I had to post a picture of my dear friend Dori and her son Connor (who had a pig at the fair for auction), as they spent up to 15 hours a day at the fair some days, caring for the pig and helping with their 4H club...wow! The fair is a wonderful thing to do as a family and a community of friends. One of those home town feelings that don't come around much any more. Even though the Farris wheel is not my favorite thing to do at the fair...I really wanted to get some photos at night from above...oh, the sacrifices one makes for a photograph! Enjoy the fair!

Norma Janneth

It's Sunday and my children are scattered among friends places today. We just got back from church and lunch, and I thought that I would post about another child that is scattered even further away (a lot further away) with her friends today. That child is one that has been a part of our family (in quite a different way) for about ten years now. Our family has been sending about $30.00 a month for a young girl named Norma Janneth for these past ten years (money that will hardly have been missed by us in the grand scheme of our life, yet hopefully has made a difference in the grand scheme of hers). We actually do not know her, but know only a bit about her...she is from Ecuador and has been able to go to school and do the normal kinds of things that other children her age are able to do. She has been able to do these things due to the fact that she is a sponsored child through World Vision. World Vision is an amazing organization that we trust to use our donated money to truly help children who are needing to know the love of the Lord through the care of those serving them. Each year World Vision send a photo of her and a note and drawing from Norma Janneth for us. As the years have passed it is quite something to see how she has grown into a beautiful young woman. I would encourage you to link over to their web site and see the wonderful things that they are doing to make a difference in the lives of children. Even in these tough economic times we continue to support her...because there is nothing like knowing that we are making a difference in even the life of one child. Be Blessed!

River Highlands Ranch {Grass Valley Wedding Photographer}

The evening was lovely...twinkle lights in a barn with wonderful food and talented people. Mind you, this was not just any barn , but one that had been designed to look like a barn but is actually an amazing wedding and event venue. I was at an NCWEDS meeting last month and had the pleasure of meeting Jane River Waskiewicz and her assistant Juanita. What lovely ladies! They gave us a beautiful tour of the place. And what a place, The River Highlands Ranch & Vineyards has got to be one of the best kept secrets in Smartsville (which is located between Marysville and Grass Valley). I have photos below of The Vineyard Barn and The Duck Pond Cabin. This is a must to look into if you are planning a wedding. Believe me, if I had one to plan I would be very likely to make this my venue of choice! The barn is the perfect place for the wedding and reception, and the cabin for the romantic and very secluded honeymoon spot. Take a peek below and see what I mean!

"A Love Song" {Sacramento Wedding Photographer}

You may have seen some of this event earlier on my blog...but just yesterday I was sent the lyric to the song that was sung at this 50th Wedding Anniversary party. This song was both written and preformed for the couple by their great niece Camille Johnson. She sang like an sparrow and was so precious when she told the story of how she had been inspired to write it as a witness to the AMAZING LOVE that Bill and La Verne have showed and shared over their lifetime together! Margaret and Tracy {Sacramento Wedding Photographer}

What a great time Lindsay and I had together with Margaret and Tracy! It was about 6:30 on Sunday afternoon when we met with them at this fabulous mural to start the photo shoot. The mural had so much awesome color to work with! But when we got to Old Town Sacramento and were able to work with the beautiful setting sun, wow, that was even more fun. These two were up for all kinds of great locations and gave it their all! Beach Couples {San Francisco Wedding Photographer}

The afternoon was awesome! Johnny and I had just spent the day on Pier 39 and had some much needed time together. It seems that our days off are few and far between. Well, that evening we were off to the beach for bit of surf...something that Johnny had spent years doing. A few years in San Francisco, but about twenty in Hawaii. Needless to say, he LOVES the ocean! When we walked down to the beach we were so surprised to find two, yes, not one but two, bride and grooms. The couples had just gotten married and were at Baker Beach for their sunset photos. The photographers and couples were so gracious to welcome another photographer (I assure you, I was off to the side) to take photos. It was such fun to have some lovely photos there with the Golden Gate Bridge in the back ground! Johnny enjoyed the "surf" while I enjoyed the lovely couples! We had a wonderful time making memories of Baker Beach with the lovely Golden Gate Bridge as our backdrop.
